  2. Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchad Gandhi was born in Porbondor, India, on 2nd October 1869. Before tell the story of Gandhi, we must know that in that time India was part of the British Empire and that the British Empire took a lot of money from the Indian peasant farmers, who were already poor. In India the society was divided in four main castes: the Brahmins, the Kshatriyas, the Vaishyas and the Shudras. And at the bottom of society were the Untouchables who lived from the alms. In India the ruler was the British Viceroy in Calcutta.

The life of Mahatma Gandhi takes time during the Boer War, where the British fought against the Dutch Republic and Portugal. In his childlife he was very shy and fearful. When he was 17, he traveled to London to study law. In London, he was living in a poor neighborhood to know how difficult life was for poor people. When he returned to India he eared about the problems that the Indians had in South Africa, he traveled to Capetown. There he founded a movement called Satyagraha, whose objective was the political equality for all people through the non-violence and the civil disobedience. There he had to fight against a new law that would take away Indian’s vote. After take away this new law, he founded the Natal Indian Congress (NIC).

When he returned back to India, he started to wear simple cloths and eat a diet of fruits and nuts. Also he established the Sabarmati Ashram, where he lived with his family and with Untouchables, who were very poor and discriminated. After did a lot of fasts that would kill him, and after a lot of meetings, he finally get the political independence of India. But he wanted an India where Muslims, Hindus and Christians could live all together. But the representative of the Muslims, Jinnah , wanted the partition of India and forms a new country called Pakistan ruled by Muslims. He finally got the partition.

Mahatma Gandhi, is called Mahatma because his great friend the poet Rabindranath Tagore put it and it means “Great Soul”, died on Friday 30th January of 1948 when a man that hated the non-violence shot him 3 times. He was cremated the next day and his ashes were set free in the holy Ganges and Jumna Rivers.
